An idea I heard about a while ago, then read again from author Mark Nepo- My heart is a gill. A fish has gills for extracting what it needs to survive (saturated oxygen) from what it has (water). The gill is an organ of transformation, existing within the body of the animal itself, enabling it to live, survive and thrive.

My heart is my gill.
